Old koa shelves repurposed into a dining table
Our customer brought in some old koa shelves to build a new dining table. We were surprised at first to be told that they came from Vladimir Ossipoff’s longtime home in Honolulu. We felt that the shelves were a piece of history right there...
We really wanted to give the pieces a well deserved second life. We tend to shy away from repurposing wood but this was different since it came from a home where Ossipoff had lived for a very long time.
As requested by the owners, we built an oval table top with a bullnose edge. The table top was matched with a vintage Herman Miller Eames base. The green chairs picked by the client are beautiful and compliment the dining table extremely well.
We love seeing koa furniture in a more contemporary environment. Plus it was a pleaesure repurposing Ossipoff’s koa bookshelves! We hope we gave the koa pieces the care and attention it deserved!
Here’s what the koa pieces looked like before we started building the table.
This is the shelving unit where the koa boards came from. This was the home Ossipoff lived in Honolulu.
